Award winning Interior Designer, Michelle Ortiz started designing at a young age. From designing her own bedroom as a young girl to designing a million dollar home. She is a true inspiration.
Michelle Ortiz was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she grew up with a love for the arts! Interiors, architecture, paintings, modeling, fashion, music, food and cultural diversity were the inspiration and driving force of her creativity. Her parents purchased her first easel and paint set when she was around eight years old. As a child, she constantly changed the style of her bedroom, she did everything from rearranging furniture, painting her bedroom, while even taking it upon herself to create and display her own unique artwork. Her favorite hobbies as a child was visiting model homes and playing dress up with her Barbie dolls... but even as a youth it was obvious, that her mind was set on pursuing something related to the arts.
After high school, she attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA, and decided to study computer science in hopes that she would have a greater chance of being employed after graduation. Unfortunately this is how most young people select their careers, safety and security usually take priority over passion and inspiration. After years of attending school and working in a career unrelated to her unique passion for design, her perspective changed. It was in that moment that she would decide to take a leap of faith and pursue her dream of interior design.
After gaining valuable insight and experience while working in the interior design field—she was ready to embark on a new journey…becoming an Entrepreneur! Deep down inside, Michelle always knew that someday she would want to start her own design firm. One that would reflect the clean, modern and minimalist design style she loves. Thus, the conception of Caliste Design began. Though her company would eventually go on to become successful; it wasn’t an overnight success. There weren’t any ribbon cutting ceremonies or clients knocking down her door in the beginning. She began her business by designing for friends and colleagues in order to begin building her personal design portfolio, and it wasn’t until she would enter into a local design contest that her business would really begin to flourish.
1. Never doubt the talent and gifts you possess.
2. Always have confidence in your ability.
3. Passion, hard work and overcoming fear are the keys to success.
From that moment on, Michelle has had clients contacting her to design their homes and businesses throughout Georgia, and other surrounding cities. Michelle specializes in residential and specialty design projects including hair salons and clothing boutiques. She enjoys designing spaces that reflect her client’s personal style. One of her favorite spaces that she has designed since starting her own firm was a 10,000 square foot home located in Tyrone, GA.
Michelle states, “One of my favorite clients that I had previously designed for while working for another company had contacted me after learning that I had started my own design firm. The home was approximately 10,000 sf, 2-story entryway & family room, grand staircase, beautiful and unique architectural details, 6 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, and it even had its own elevator. I was challenged with creating a beautiful and functional space that reflected my client’s personal style. My goal was to design a space that her and her family would enjoy for years to come. I was extremely excited to work on the biggest design project of my career as an entrepreneur at that time. I wasn’t nervous or anxious, because as an interior designer, you learn that you have to step out of your comfort zone in order to embrace the opportunity to grow and learn as a designer. “
Michelle continues to grow and pursue her passion for interior design by designing and creating beautiful spaces for her clients. She enjoys networking and learning new things while simultaneously developing her design skills. She is always looking for opportunities to expand her vision and inspire others to do the same.
