2018 is the year of the new!
Each Thursday The Positivity Brand will share a #PinchofPositivity that will leave you smiling and empowered. This week's Pinch of Positivity comes from a show everyone knows and loves, Sesame Street. This video aired back in October of 2017 but the inspiration behind it is definitely worth sharing!
A brown Muppet with an Afro is pure Gold. I was interested in seeing what the exact message that was being sent to the kids of the digital generation. Television today has changed dramatically and I appreciate how Sesame Street has changed along with it. This digital age has definitely brought about more social justice issues. Sesame Street has addressed the love of Naturalistas and being an African American natural hair lover myself, I LOVE IT. Each day I find new reasons to fall in love with my natural hair, but I still have days when I look in the mirror and wish my hair did this or did that. This video reminds me of all things I can do to my hair and appreciate what I was born with. If I would have seen more videos like this growing up, I would have definitely avoided perming my hair. Growing up the media emphasized women having long straight hair was beautiful and that translated to the dolls I played with and how I felt about myself. I understand why Sesame Street's head writer came up with this simple but cute message.
Joey Mazzarino is the head writer of Sesame Street and the Muppeteer that created this song. He wrote it for his 5-year old daughter, Segi. Mazzarino and his wife adopted her from Ethiopia when she was a baby. Mazzarino noticed that Segi wanted long blonde hair like the dolls she played with and as a white (Italian) parent of a Black child, he struggled with doing Segi's hair while his wife was away. He wanted to make sure she knew that her hair was beautiful just the way it was, so Mazzarino learned how to do hair just for her and created this song to empower her. This song not only touched his daughter but other kids and adults around the world!
